Walgreens 101 - A new friend in your clique

Walgreen's is a lot like that mysterious foreign-exchange boyfriend you had freshman year of college – a little complicated a first, but SOOO worth the effort!
Walgreen's has FOUR ways to save money, which, when combined, equals lots of free stuff for me each month. Once you get the hang of it, it’s really easy!

1) Weekly In-Ad coupon – These are found in the weekly ad (either delivered to your home or pick up their ad at the front of the store). They advertise a price (eg. Suave Shampoo for 99¢) and most have a limit on how many items you can buy with the coupon. You must use the coupon in order to get the advertised coupon price. If the coupon says Suave Shampoo 99¢, limit 4 then you can buy 4 shampoos and just use the one coupon. Once the coupon is scanned it will subtract a certain amount that will make all 4 bottles of shampoo only 99¢ each. These coupons CAN be combined with other coupons and rebates (such as manufacturers coupons) which can add up to big savings.
2) Walgreen's Easy Saver Catalog coupons - The Wags Easy Saver Catalog is found at the front of the store next to the Walgreen's Weekly Ad (they are skinny & shiny like a brochure). The front of the booklet has Walgreen's coupons called Instant Value Coupons (alias = IVCs). These coupons can be combined with manufacturer coupons AND weekly In-Ad coupons!
3) Walgreen's Easy Saver Catalog rebates – My favorite part! I get PAID by Walgreen's to buy certain items every month. Seriously. In the back of the Easy Saver Catalog you will find a lot of rebate offers and these offers are typically good all month. They offer several “Free-After-Rebate” items each month. Rebates can be mailed in or submitted online (which is the easiest way, saves on postage and then you’ve got the original receipts to participate in manufacturer rebates, too!). You can choose to have a check mailed to you or have your rebate put on a Walgreen's Gift Card (which can be used for almost anything, including prescription co pays). HERE’S HOW TO MAKE A PROFIT ON THIS: When you select the gift card option, Wags will give you an additional 10% bonus back. Also, you can use coupons for the Free-After-Rebate items and still get the rebate for the full amount. Here’s an example: there’s a Free-After-Rebate offer for $3.99 back on a bottle of $3.99 shampoo - I use a $1.50 coupon on the shampoo when I buy it (only $2.49 out of pocket) – Walgreen's gives me a rebate for the full $3.99 plus 10% bonus. So, I end up with $4.38 on a gift card and only spent $2.49 – that’s a $1.89 profit plus the shampoo was basically free! Even if the rebate item isn’t something you would normally use, if it’s a profit for you, you can either stockpile it for future use or donate it to a worthy charity (see my stockpiling post for more details).
4) Walgreen's Register Rewards: RR – these are manufacturer coupons that print out when your transaction is completed - coupons that are used on your next purchase. Remember, when completing a transaction that earns Register Rewards you CAN also use coupons! When you earn a Register Reward you can use it to buy other items that earn Register Rewards, but not on the same deal. For example: Buy baby wipes for $5.99, earn $3 Register Rewards. Then buy a Venus Razor for $7.99, use $3 RR from wipes, earn $4 RR for buying the razor.

Don’t worry if it sounds complicated - Starting in March, I’ll start posting the monthly deals so you can see what you could get for free and how much money you could profit on those items. Also, I’ll be submitting my on-line rebate for this month in a day or two, so I’ll post that, along with the math and a photo, so you can really “pick up what I’m puttin’ down”. It’s even more fun than the before-mentioned foreign exchange boyfriend!

EXTREME Frugality - Saving even MORE!

Each week, I'll be posting, tips for EXTREME Frugality. What is extreme frugality (EF)? It's the stuff you can do, beyond the everyday tips, to save money. Everyone knows the basics (shop sales with coupons, drive less, etc.) but there are lots of things you can do to save money that many people have never thought of doing.

Some of these are old stand-bys, some are new, some are a little funny and some are considered downright gross. You're view on these will depend on how much money you want or need to save.

Remember my motto - "pennies make dollars and dollars make house payments!".

  • Take your recycling (and the recycling of other families, if they're OK with it) to a recycling center for cash back.
  • Flush less - yes I'm serious! Follow the old hippie saying "if it's yellow, let it mellow - if it's brown, then flush it down". You could easily cut your water bill by $10/month and it's better for the environment.
  • Line dry your clothes - at least one load per month. This saves in several ways. First, it saves wear & tear and your clothes (what do you think dryer lint is? It's bits of your clothing slowly falling apart!); second, it saves electricity (some people have saved over $30/month on their bill with just this one change!); it saves wear & tear on your dryer (so it lasts longer). You can hang clothes inside your home, basement or on your back porch. I typically use my dryer for the first 10 - 15 minutes and then line dry for the remainder.
  • Reuse tooth floss (I promised a few gross ideas, didn't I?)
  • Eat meatless meals at least twice per week (rice & beans together make a complete protein for about 1/3 of the cost of meat and it's better for you!)
  • Learn to cut your own hair, or at least trim your own bangs, which could extend your cut for a few weeks (three fewer cuts per year could save the average person over $100/year). I don't cut my own hair, but I do often cut my kid's hair, for a savings of over $65/year.
  • Get "freebies" from the Internet whenever possible (check here each week for a list of updated freebies). (A good source: Get your Free Samples. Updated with a complete new list of Free Stuff every 24 hours. Get yours Now! Click Here )

Got more EF ideas to share? Please leave them here in the comments section so everyone can learn from you!

How to EARN $$ by filling your prescriptions

The key to saving money is to develop a creatively-frugal attitude and to ALWAYS be looking for new ways to use the store's own policies to your advantage. One great way of making money for something you already do? Filling your prescriptions using pharmacy coupons.

  • Most stores offer incentives for you to get your prescriptions from them - coupons in the paper for $10 Target gift card for any NEW or TRANSFERRED script; $25 Walgreen's gift card for any TRANSFERRED script, etc. Once you start watching for them, you'll notice them everywhere. When you see one, KEEP IT (and ask friends & family for their unused ones, which can come in handy, see example below).
  • Keep them organized in your coupon box, under a tab for each store (CVS, Walgreen's, Target, etc.)
  • Notice if the coupon is for NEW and TRANSFERRED or just transferred scripts. The coupons for new scripts are great for antibiotics, ear drops, etc. These are less common.
  • The coupons for transferred scripts are great for anyone who takes medicine on a regular basis.
  • Example - My husband, son and I each have one medication that we must take every month (allergies)....we usually get them filled at Kroger. However, there was recently a coupon for $25 gift card at Walgreen's for any transferred script - good for one coupon per person, regardless of how many scripts you wanted to transfer. SO, I collected a few extra coupons from friends who weren't going to use them, then I transferred our scripts to Walgreen's (took about 3 minutes on the phone with Walgreen's, they handled all the details) and about an hour later, had $75 in Walgreen gift cards!
  • You could transfer your scripts as often as you like, making money each month! (next month, I'll be transferring to Meijer, as they had a coupon out last month).
  • There are sometimes coupons on the stores' own websites that you can print out and take to the pharmacy.
  • Some stores take competitor coupons, just ask your store manager.
  • Have a list of your other medicines written down for the pharmacists, in case there are any interactions they need to be aware of.

This is an easy way to save and earn money!
