Walgreen's is a lot like that mysterious foreign-exchange boyfriend you had freshman year of college – a little complicated a first, but SOOO worth the effort!
Walgreen's has FOUR ways to save money, which, when combined, equals lots of free stuff for me each month. Once you get the hang of it, it’s really easy!
1)
Weekly In-Ad coupon – These are found in the weekly ad (either delivered to your home or pick up their ad at the front of the store). They advertise a price (eg. Suave Shampoo for 99¢) and most have a limit on how many items you can buy with the coupon. You must use the coupon in order to get the advertised coupon price. If the coupon says Suave Shampoo 99¢, limit 4 then you can buy 4 shampoos and just use the one coupon. Once the coupon is scanned it will subtract a certain amount that will make all 4 bottles of shampoo only 99¢ each.
These coupons CAN be combined with other coupons and rebates (such as manufacturers coupons) which can add up to big savings.
2)
Walgreen's Easy Saver Catalog coupons - The Wags Easy Saver Catalog is found at the front of the store next to the Walgreen's Weekly Ad (they are skinny & shiny like a brochure). The front of the booklet has Walgreen's coupons called Instant Value Coupons (alias = IVCs).
These coupons can be combined with manufacturer coupons AND weekly In-Ad coupons!3)
Walgreen's Easy Saver Catalog rebates – My favorite part!
I get PAID by Walgreen's to buy certain items every month. Seriously. In the back of the Easy Saver Catalog you will find a lot of rebate offers and these offers are typically good all month. They offer several “Free-After-Rebate” items each month. Rebates can be mailed in or submitted online (which is the easiest way, saves on postage and then you’ve got the original receipts to participate in manufacturer rebates, too!). You can choose to have a check mailed to you or have your rebate put on a Walgreen's Gift Card (which can be used for almost anything, including prescription co pays).
HERE’S HOW TO MAKE A PROFIT ON THIS: When you select the gift card option, Wags will give you an additional 10% bonus back. Also, you can use coupons for the Free-After-Rebate items and still get the rebate for the full amount. Here’s an example: there’s a Free-After-Rebate offer for $3.99 back on a bottle of $3.99 shampoo - I use a $1.50 coupon on the shampoo when I buy it (only $2.49 out of pocket) – Walgreen's gives me a rebate for the full $3.99 plus 10% bonus. So, I end up with $4.38 on a gift card and only spent $2.49 – that’s a $1.89 profit plus the shampoo was basically free! Even if the rebate item isn’t something you would normally use, if it’s a profit for you, you can either stockpile it for future use or donate it to a worthy charity (see my stockpiling post for more details).
4)
Walgreen's Register Rewards: RR – these are manufacturer coupons that print out when your transaction is completed - coupons that are used on your next purchase. Remember, when completing a transaction that earns Register Rewards you CAN also use coupons! When you earn a Register Reward you can use it to buy other items that earn Register Rewards, but not on the same deal. For example: Buy baby wipes for $5.99, earn $3 Register Rewards. Then buy a Venus Razor for $7.99, use $3 RR from wipes, earn $4 RR for buying the razor.
Don’t worry if it sounds complicated - Starting in March, I’ll start posting the monthly deals so you can see what you could get for free and how much money you could profit on those items. Also, I’ll be submitting my on-line rebate for this month in a day or two, so I’ll post that, along with the math and a photo, so you can really “pick up what I’m puttin’ down”. It’s even more fun than the before-mentioned foreign exchange boyfriend!
